Snark and Motivation for October

Market season is over, and while I'm sad that I won't get to see people in person as much, I'm a bit grateful for the opportunity to slow down and focus on some of my bigger art ideas. I'm currently working on whales, and coral reefs, and jellyfish - oh my!

This brings me to the dismantling of "An Unblighted Area," the exhibit I had up at Heartland Community College. Most of the pieces from the exhibit will be available for purchase on our website this Saturday, October 19th, at 4 pm CT. We'll also be including the paper flowers that I made, as well as artist edition prints that I created by photographing my paper flowers and magazine leftovers. We're calling our prints "Snark and Motivation" because I so want to be a person who is considered inspirational and motivational...but sometimes I'm a bit of a petty princess, and snark and sarcasm become my language of choice. These new prints encompass all of that. (And greeting cards are coming!)

Of course, we're adding some new jewelry designs this weekend, as well. We love making our "old dirty balls" hoops, but we wanted something more subtle and economical for the holiday season - so we made "old dirty ball" drops! They'll be available this Saturday, October 19th, at 4 PM CT.

I'm excited to announce that Emily Pitman recently went from Hey Lola employee to Hey Lola partner! Running a sustainable business that's driven by People + Planet values is not always easy, and I often find myself overwhelmed with trying to create art AND constantly trying to learn all of the other admin things associated with running a business. Emily does all of the things that I can't, and she does them well. I'm so grateful that she wanted to be a permanent part of this company. And by Emily taking on this role, I've been able to expand back into educational efforts! In the last month, I've been able to speak to three different college classes, be interviewed on a television program regarding our non-profit work with our local unhoused friends, and attend city meetings to share our experiences working with our unhoused population (via LULA NFP). I think this work is so valuable and I'm really excited to be able to step back into it. If you think I might be a good fit for your school, please reach out - I love these speaking events and presentations!

I wouldn't be me if I wasn't woefully behind on my task list, so while I CAN tell you that we've been continuing our regular clean-ups and monthly donations to Mangrove Action Project and Ocean Conservancy, I can't give you a count. Because I'm behind. Because of course I am.

If you want to support our clean-up and education efforts, but you just don't have room for any more jewelry or art in your life at the moment, please check out our "Buy Nothing" page. When you "Buy Nothing" from us, you get nothing in return...except the knowledge that you're helping us get litter out of the streets and waterways, educate people about being good stewards for our planet, and advocate for our unhoused population. So maybe you get some good feelings when you buy nothing. I hope you do. Your support means everything, and I'm grateful for you every single day.

Love,

Jessica

OH! PS - Next week we're retiring all of our flower earrings until next spring, so if you've been eyeing them, this is the time to grab them!
